All Things Apple: Pick Your Own Apples in Kawarthas Northumberland

Anyone who’s spent a year in Ontario knows apples taste best in fall. The crisp, tart taste of a fresh apple gives pumpkin spice a run for its money as the flavour of the season. Orchards across Kawarthas Northumberland are bearing fruit now, and many remain open well into October.

Don’t wait—get picking with the pickin’s good with this list of pick-your-own apple destinations in the region. Just be advised it’s a good idea to check ahead to see which varieties are still available.

Trowfield Landing Orchards (Corner of Selwyn Rd & Centre Line Smith, Lakefield)

On the scenic backroads outside Lakefield, this cheerful orchard offers pick-your-own apples in addition to a farm store with fresh produce and pantry staples. Trowfield Landing is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10 to 5, as well as holiday Monday.

Pieter’s Appleyard (13516 County Road 2, Colborne)

Pick your own orchard-fresh apples at Pieter’s Appleyard, or grab a bag from its country store. When you’re finished picking, you can climb the hill and get a gorgeous view of Lake Ontario. Pieter’s Appleyard is open Thursday to Monday from 10 to 4:30, and closes for the season October 19.

Moore Orchards (1497 Moore Orchard Road, Cobourg)

Check the address for a clue what an institution this Northumberland County destination is. Moore Orchards produces many delicious varieties of apples—at least ten in 2026—with most available as pick-your-own so you can spend your time on the grounds savouring the season. Moore Orchards is open Monday to Saturday from 9 to 5, and Sundays from 1-4.

Dunnett Orchards (143 Dundas St, Brighton)

Burnham Family Farm Market (7760 County Road 2, Cobourg)

Burnham Family Farm Market is about more than just apples. Their store offers quality local and Ontario-grown produce, while the bakery produces a range of treats both sweet and savoury. Nothing beats fresh fruit you picked yourself, of course, so visit their pick-your-own apple orchard Saturdays and Sundays from 10-4.

Holliday’s Farm Fresh Vegetables (1641 Glenarm Road, Kawartha Lakes)

As the name suggests, Holliday’s Farm Fresh Vegetables is a go-to place for produce. The 24th Annual Kawartha Farmfest on Saturday, October 3 is the perfect time to visit. You can pick a bushel at Holliday’s, but there are many more agritourism experiences to explore throughout the region from 10 to 4.

Kawartha Country Wines (2452 County Road 36, Buckhorn)

Honorable mention goes to Kawartha Country Wines, who produce a range of ciders that pairs beautiful with fall colours and sweater weather. Bring home a bottle of cider and don’t miss the generous tasting bar, where you can sample wines made from local fruits and berries. Open seven days a week from 10 to 5.

The Big Apple (262 Orchard Rd, Cramahe)

How could any self-respecting apple listicle skip The Big Apple? While you can’t pick your own here, you can do just about every other apple-related activity. Stop in at this Colborne classic for a selfie with the giant apple, fresh pies, local cider, and a whole host of kid-friendly activities like mini-golf and a petting zoo. Open seven days a week, 8 to 7:30 Monday to Friday, 8AM-8PM on weekends.

Yes, B.C. has a reputation: mountains, ocean, rainforest and overall, beauty with a capital B. But every time someone says it, I find myself wanting to reply, “Have you stopped and looked around here?”
