All Things Apple: Pick Your Own Apples in Kawarthas Northumberland

Anyone who’s spent a year in Ontario knows apples taste best in fall. The crisp, tart taste of a fresh apple gives pumpkin spice a run for its money as the flavour of the season. Orchards across Kawarthas Northumberland are bearing fruit now, and many remain open well into October.

Don’t wait—get picking with the pickin’s good with this list of pick-your-own apple destinations in the region. Just be advised it’s a good idea to check ahead to see which varieties are still available.

Trowfield Landing Orchards (Corner of Selwyn Rd & Centre Line Smith, Lakefield)

On the scenic backroads outside Lakefield, this cheerful orchard offers pick-your-own apples in addition to a farm store with fresh produce and pantry staples. Trowfield Landing is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10 to 5, as well as holiday Monday.

Pick your own orchard-fresh apples at Pieter’s Appleyard, or grab a bag from its country store. When you’re finished picking, you can climb the hill and get a gorgeous view of Lake Ontario. Pieter’s Appleyard is open Thursday to Monday from 10 to 4:30, and closes for the season October 19.

Harley Farms is built on strong fundamentals. The Keene-area farm produces high welfare beef, pork, and lamb, as well as eggs, chicken, and turkey. That means ensuring their animals are free from stress, hunger, and thirst, as well as free to exhibit natural behaviours such as foraging and roaming. On top of that foundation, they’ve added agritourism experiences to help show the public exactly what that means.
