The Big Apple

262 Orchard Rd, Colborne

You can’t miss The Big Apple. Driving East on the 401, you’re greeted with a giant red smiling apple on the side of the highway. This is more than just a bakery and store famous for its apple pies—it’s a full roadside attraction with a huge retail shop where you’ll find baked goods, gifts, souvenirs, cider, sauces, and more. In the warmer months, families can enjoy a petting zoo, mini-putt, apple observation deck, kids train, and carousel ride.

The Big Apple offers traditional maple syrups in fun bottle shapes like maple leaves and hockey players, as well as flavoured syrups, such as strawberry and wild blueberry. Their maple-infused treats include apple pie, cream cookies, leaf chocolates, and fudge. They also feature maple-inspired beverages, including maple tea, and a breakfast bundle with apple spice pancake mix, pure syrup, maple tea, and a maple candy bag.

Quaker Oaks Farm Store

Experience the whimsical charm of Quaker Oaks Farm.  Browse the roadside shop that features an eclectic mix of food, art, crafts, gifts and souvenirs.  Famous for handmade stuffed olives and an award-winning butter tart, Quaker Oaks’ recipes have been passed down through generations and have deep roots in family heritage and customs. Stop by the market stand for seasonal produce and savour the rich traditions of farming and local food production. This family-run business also houses an animal sanctuary where rescue animals live in peace, as part of the family.

Peterborough is home to two year-round farmers’ markets taking place on Saturdays: one held downtown at Peterborough Square, and one in the Morrow Building on Lansdowne Street.

You’ll find local maple syrup at both, such as Wagner Farm at the Peterborough Regional Farmers’ Market and four-time Royal Winter Fair world champion Staples Maple Syrup at the Peterborough Farmers’ Market.

A family-owned fruit winery in the heart of the Kawarthas, Kawartha Country Wines crafts wines from locally sourced fruits and berries to show how delicious fruit wines can be. Their retail store, set in a rustic log building, features locally made jams, sauces, cookies, sweets, gift baskets, and maple syrup products. Enjoy free wine tastings, and in summer, weekends come alive with live music and wood-fired pizza. Spring is a great time to stop by and see the apple tree blossoms, and a second building hosts year-round events and workshops.

Argyle Farm Market

26 Country Club Dr, Fenelon Falls

In the late 1800’s, the Argyle Farm Market, previously known as “the old Argyle Hotel”, was situated along the Toronto and Nippissing Railway Line and served as a hotel for those travelling by train to Coboconk. Today, the main floor and verandah serve as a farmer’s market where fresh local food products are sold.
