Must-see & Must-do

• Kirkfield boasts the second highest lift lock in the world. (The highest is in Peterborough, also on the Trent Severn Waterway.) This engineering marvel is just 4km north of downtown Kirkfield. You can boat through this lift lock, or you can enjoy a picnic with a scenic view of the traffic through the lock.

Eats & Treats

• Taste great local fare (and try some Butter Tart Tour stops) at Bexley Golf Centre and Kirkfield Restaurant.

Move Yourself

• Get yourself over to Balsam Lake Provincial Park, just a few kilometres north east of Kirkfield. Enjoy their sandy beach for a swim. If you’re itching for a stimulating hike, try the great views on the Lookout Trail (1.5 hours) or the natural and cultural history of the Plantation Trail (2 hours).

• Among it’s other great facilities, Balsam Lake Provincial Park also offers canoe, kayak, and paddleboat rentals! The lake has many inlets that are great for exploring.

• Fishing for walleye, muskie (including the impressive tiger muskie!), and bass is great on Balsam Lake. Actually, Balsam Lake is also great for catching northern pike, bluegill, yellow perch, black crappie, carp, and catfish! There’s a good boat launch at Rosedale.

• There’s also great fishing nearby on Mitchell Lake, Canal Lake, and Kirkfield Lake!

• Biking in this area is beautiful. The 67km Carden Ramble Route is a favourite amongst local cycling groups, featuring rolling hills, flat farmland, and nice views of the Kirkfield Lift Lock and the Trent Severn Waterway. Check out this useful cycling webpage at Explore Kawartha Lakes for links to more details.
