Home to Canada’s Treasured Waterway
Peterborough & the Kawarthas is home to the highest hydraulic lift lock in the world. This National Historic Site of Canada lifts boats 19.8 meters in the air providing a view like no other. Opened with great fanfare in 1904, the Peterborough Lift Lock towers almost 20m(65ft) above the Trent Canal. Powered by gravity it lifts two counter-balanced, bath-tub like chambers over an elevation that once would have required several locks to achieve.
