Region’s Best Butter Tarts chosen at Kawarthas Northumberland Butter Tart Taste-Off

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Peterborough, Ontario— The best butter tarts in four categories were chosen at the third annual Kawarthas Northumberland Butter Tart Taste-Off on Saturday, September 19, 2015. The event, held in the Morrow Building during the Peterborough Farmers’ Market, saw a steady stream of farm market shoppers looking for the most Canadian of sweet desserts—butter tarts. CHEX TV weather analyst Mike Judson was emcee, guiding panels of celebrity judges through the delicious task of picking the winners.

The event was a big success, with an enthusiastic audience for the judging, and many people lining up at vendor tables to sample butter tarts and vote for their favourite. Vendors provided free samples and also sold butter tarts, with most selling out.

The four bakery winners of the Butter Tart Taste-Off this year win a vendor booth space and overnight stay to attend Ontario’s Best Annual Buttertart Festival in Midland, ON. Congratulations to the following bakeries:

The award for Best Overall Plain Butter Tart went to Sweet Kitchen (Lindsay), with Landing 27 Bistro (Peterborough) in 2nd place and Eganridge Inn and Spa (Fenelon Falls) in 3rd place.

Best Locally Sourced Butter Tart went to Peterborough’s Whistle Stop Cafe (Peterborough) who regularly sell their Cream Cheese Butter Tart at their café. Doo Doo’s Bakery (Bailieboro) in 2nd place with her new Cricket Maple Bacon Tart, and Burnham Family Farm Market (Cobourg) placing 3rd with their Apple Butter Tart, made with apples from their farm.

Yellow Cake Bakery (Port Hope) won for Best Alternative Tart with her Peach Tart, with entries from Doo Doo’s Bakery taking both 2nd and 3rd place with her Pecan Cheesecake Tart and her Apple Crumble Tart.

Approximately 2000 people visited and more than 800 people voted for the People’s Choice Award. Doo Doo’s Bakery won the People’s Choice category, with Whistle Stop Café in 2nd place and Sweet Kitchen in 3rd place.

Although this year’s Kawarthas Northumberland Butter Tart Taste-Off is officially over, the good news is that our region celebrates butter tarts all year long. Simply download our maps for a list of participants in the 2015 Butter Tart Tour, and plan some road trips to track down the region’s best butter tarts.

“We’re thrilled with the turnout for the Butter Tart Taste-Off,” said Brenda Wood, Executive Director of sponsoring organization of Regional Tourism Organization 8 (RTO8). “The competition was serious yet very good-natured, and I saw a lot of people going home with butter tarts purchased from vendors. It was a great day.”

RTO8 is funded by the Ontario Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport (OMTCS) to promote regional tourism activity in the area that is now branded as Kawarthas Northumberland.
