Arts & Heritage

Arts & Heritage

Up a creek for something cultural to do this weekend? Explore your historical muse at a museum in Kawarthas Northumberland. This could include paddling into the rich past of Upper Canada at the Canadian Canoe Museum in Peterborough, or doing time with the history of Kawartha Lakes area as you hit the Olde Gaol Museum. If art openings, events, installations and meeting artists are more your fancy, come to Kawarthas Northumberland during the month of April and explore exhibits across the region at SPARK Photo Festival.

Museums & Galleries

Living Museums

Children will especially love their history brought to life at Lang Pioneer Village in Keene or Kawartha Settlers’ Village in Bobcaygeon. Adults will also find amusement in these museums.

Art Galleries

However, if art is more you than artifacts, browse one of the many galleries in Cobourg, Lindsay, Peterborough and Brighton. You can even make your own clay sculpture at the Whetung Ojibwa native gallery in Curve Lake. Photography enthusiasts will want to explore the exhibits across the region put on through SPARK Photo Festival and art lovers travelling through the Kawarthas in mid August will want to stop by the Buckhorn Fine Arts Festival (www.buckhornfineart.com), which is considered one of the Top 100 Festivals in Ontario (www.festivalsandeventsontario.ca/members/top-100). Another major art happening in early September is the Northumberland Hills Studio Tour (www.northumberlandstudiotour.com), which allows a more intimate appreciation of local artists throughout the county.

Live Theatre

Kawarthas Northumberland is also your ticket to performances of all kinds, whether you prefer to stage your weekend fun more theatrically, or like the sound of a concert better. In fact, with so many live events offered in venues and outdoor festivals across the region, you’ll definitely need a number of encore weekend visits to take in them all.
